The Art of Telling Your Family's Story

Everyone has a story to tell. This event seeks to celebrate the art of storytelling by creating a “living archive” of the voices of military families in our community. Participants will learn the fundamentals of storytelling and interviewing tips and strategies, and trained facilitators will work one-on-one to help each family create a multimedia story that is unique to each family’s life story and the memories they want to preserve. Throughout the evening, participants will engage in experiential learning and rotate through the following digital storytelling stations:

■ Narrative: Participants will learn the art of interviewing and craft a list of interview questions.

■ Audio: Participants will create a voice-over and introduction to their family story.
■ Sound Effects: Participants will select sounds to add ambience to their family story.
■ Photography: Participants will upload and scan family photos and story board a sequence of images.
■ Images: Participants will learn about the power of symbols and select
components to create their own family crest.

■ Video: Participants will interview their family member. Each conversation will be recorded on a free DVD which will be available at a public exhibit (scheduled for another date). Each family will have their family crest printed in color on high-quality parchment paper and framed. They will also be given a Muse-Art DVD/CD ROM that will equip them with multimedia resources to help them continue to preserve and to tell their family story. Muse-Art will edit the materials from the storytelling seminar and mail each family their produced digital story.

This workshop is a pilot project that seeks to create and strengthen meaningful connections in our local community, and the stories will be collected and premiered at a public exhibit later this year. It is open to all military families, active or veterans.
